Thomas Eugene Johnston, Sr.
With a ray of sunshine to light the way, Thomas Eugene Johnston, Sr., 87 of Ripplemead, left the arms of his loved ones for his Heavenly home on Saturday, September 7th, 2013. He was born in Pearisburg on May 3rd, 1926, and was the son of the late Emory S. and Eula Ould Johnston. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by a half-brother, Emory Stafford Johnston. Tommy was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, and a dairy farmer on the family farm in Ripplemead for 50 years before moving to Pearisburg and living there for 18 years. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, and was an active member of the Ripplemead Ruritan Club. Upon retirement, he and Evelyn enjoyed visiting family and traveling, having visited all 50 states and overseas. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years, Evelyn H. Johnston; a daughter, Erma and Jim Miller of Hardy, Virginia; a son, Thomas E. Johnston, Jr. and wife Emily of Richmond; one grandson, J.B. Miller, III and Cindy Miller of Roanoke; four great-grandchildren, Elissa and Amanda Miller, Abbey and Lily Robbins, all of Roanoke; a brother, Donald O. Johnston and wife Peggy of Princeton, WV; a sister, Earalyn DeBusk and husband Dickey of Ripplemead; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends. A committal service will be held Tuesday, September 10th, 2013 at 1 PM at Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg with Rev. Dr. Brian Burch officiating. The family requests that those sending memorial contributions, please consider the Giles County Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society. The family is being served by Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg, VA.
