Ralph Lugar Givens

Ralph Lugar Givens, 89 of Narrows, VA went to be with the Lord on July 1, 2014 in Pearisburg, VA. Ralph was born in Simmonsville, VA on April 2, 1925 and was a son of the late Zannie Edward Brown Givens and Lena Florence Lugar Givens. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Morris Brown Givens, Sr. Ralph was a WWII Navy Veteran serving on the U.S.S. Midway. Ralph then graduated from V.P.I. with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1950 where he went to work for N.N.S. & D.D. Co. at the Norfolk Shipyard and then worked as an engineer at the Celanese Corp. in Narrows, VA., where he retired. Ralph was a member of the Seventh Street Christian Church in Richmond and was an avid Tech Athletic fan following the Hokies all over this country with his wife. He also enjoyed farming and raising cattle on the home place in Simmonsville, Va. in Craig Co. His nieces and nephews knew him as a generous, jovial, fatherly figure who tried to make every visit an adventure. His hospitality was endless; if you went to dinner, he would make sure the check came to him, working it out with the restaurant staff in advance if necessary. Relatives remember him as a true gentleman, someone whose graciousness they wished to emulate. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marion Bowen Givens of Narrows, VA, two nieces, Linda Givens Walls and husband David of Richmond, Betsy Bowen & husband John Ross of Charlotte, NC, two nephews, Morris Brown (Marty) Givens, Jr. of Richmond, Lester Burns Bowen, III and wife Barbara of Haddonfield, NJ, and many cousins. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 1:00pm at the Ross Cemetery in Craig Co. VA. Memorial donations may be made to the VA Tech Athletic Fund, P.O.
