Lillian Raye Johnston Pack, 93, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, in the Joy Household of the Huffman Health Center, Bridgewater Retirement Community, Bridgewater, Virginia. Mrs. Pack had resided in Bridgewater since March 13, 2007, following a stroke on February 7th of that year. She had previously lived most of her life in Giles County, in Pearisburg, Virginia. Lillian was born in Matewan, West Virginia, on August 17, 1923, the daughter of the late Miles Lee and Minnie Stephens Johnston. Lillian was educated in the Giles County Schools at Eggleston, Virginia, graduating from Eggleston High School in 1941. She retired from Celanese Corporation, Narrows, Virginia, with over 40 years of employment. Mrs. Pack was a member of the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church. After her move to the Shenandoah Valley, she often worshiped at Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church with her daughter and son-in-law until her health prevented her from traveling. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two bothers and sisters-inlaw, Edward L. and Ruby B. Johnston, and Donald S. and Ruby D. Johnston. Lillian was also predeceased by all of her Stephens and Johnston first cousins and one great-niece, Janey Denise Bayse. Lillian is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Brenda P. and Robert H. Woods, III, of Bridgewater, VA; daughter Linda P. Woodyard of Pearisburg, VA; two grandsons, Andrew N. Woodyard and his wife, Jacquelyn McCarthy Woodyard, of Lorton, VA; and Matthew A. Woodyard of Richmond, VA; and a great-grandson, Miles Anderson Woodyard, born to Andrew and Jackie Woodyard on April 6, 2016. Surviving are seven nieces and nephews all of Virginia and their families: Larry E. and June C. Johnston, Lebanon; Michael L. and Carole N. Johnston, Pembroke; Russell S. and Bonita B. Johnston, Troutville; Virginia J. and C. Gregory Bandy, Pembroke; Nancy J. and Charles S. Edwards, Waynesboro; Alice J. and Michael Bayse, Fairlawn; and H. Van Johnston, Staffordsville; fourteen great-nieces and nephews; and twenty great-great nieces and nephews. Lillian is survived by several of her Stephens’ first cousins’ spouses and her Stephens and Johnston cousins’ families. Also, surviving are Lillian’s church family, the Rev. Shirley Larson, and members of the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church. Lillian’s church family remembered her for 9 1/2 years with their prayers, visits, cards, and other expressions of love and care. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg on Thursday, October 13th with a graveside service at Birchlawn Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, October 29, 2:00 p.m. at the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Shirley Larson and the Reverend C. Edward Pruitt officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the memorial service at the church.
