Hobart Kyle Dunn

Hobart Kyle "Sonny" Dunn was welcomed into the arms of his Savior on Thursday, February 9, 2023, at the home of his daughter in Staunton, Virginia. Sonny was born September 29, 193 1 in Giles County, Virginia to William Hobert and Josie Kathryn Reed Dunn. He grew up attending Giles County and Monroe County public schools and working on the family farm.  In 1952 he was drafted into the United States Army and sent to Korea where he served as a medic. He was very proud to have served the country he deeply loved. Upon returning statewide, Sonny married the love of his life, Phyllis Martin Dunn, and together they raised three daughters in Pearisburg, Virginia. After 45 years of dedicated service, he retired from the Hoechst Celanese Corporation as a lab technician. In 2000 he and Phyllis moved to the Staunton area, where he continued to be a faithful member of the United Methodist Church.  Sonny was a man of faith who loved his Lord, and could be found deep in prayer and reading his Bible. He especially found joy in old traditional hymns. Sonny loved spending time with his family, following the Giles High Spartans football program, rooting for the Virginia Cavaliers, listening to country music, watching game shows, eating seafood feasts, traveling to the Smoky Mountains, and winning at games of rook, croquet, miniature golf and horseshoes.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Phyllis, his beloved wife of 54 years and a son-in-law, George Patterson.  He is survived by his three sisters, Ervil Law of Peterstown, WV, Norma Jean Jones, also of Peterstown, WV, Hallie Jo Smith of Flint, MI.  Also left to cherish his memory are his three daughters, Debbie Patterson of Christiansburg, Gail (Steve) Austin of Pearisburg, Pam (Tim) Austin of Staunton; six grandchildren, David Dufault (Leslie) of Chesapeake, Heather Teta (Brian) of Rockville Centre, NY, Daniel Dufault (Kristin) of Parker, CO, Brad Austin (Lauren) of Charlotte, NC, Kate Stauffer (Kyle) of Grottoes, and Adam Austin of Harrisonburg; and ten great grandchildren.  A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Givens Funeral Home, Pearisburg, Va. with the Revs. Ryan Oswald and Fred Austin officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park with military graveside services to be provided by the Honor Guard of the American Legion Post  311 and Post 68.  Active pallbearers will be grandsons, grandsons-in-law and a family friend. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Local arrangements have been entrusted to the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes and Crematory.  Relatives and friends may share condolences and memories with the family online by visiting   www.reynoldshamrickfuneralhomes.com and www.givensfuneralhome.com.
