Fred Bell Givens, Jr.

Fred (F.B.) Bell Givens, Jr. 82 of Newport, VA went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at his home. Fred was born on October 24, 1934 in Fredericksburg, VA and was a son of the late Fred Bell Givens, Sr. and Bertha Noggle Givens. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Fred Bell Givens, III and one brother, Dwayne Floyd Givens. Fred received his B.S. degree from VA. Tech and his M.S. from Penn State in Agriculture Engineering. While his first love was farming, he retired from the Federal Dept. of Soil and Water Conservation Services. Fred was widely known as “Mr. Pumpkin” after having the “Misty Mt. Pumpkin Festival” on his farm. After nine years of this festival, Fred and Rennie sold homemade ice cream at fairs and festivals making it with a “John Deer hit and miss engine. Fred loved his family, his church and people in general and was so proud of his grandchildren. He is survived by, his wife of 61 years, Irene (Rennie) Semones Givens of Newport, son Joseph K. Givens and wife Leslie B. of Newport, one daughter Amy Suzanne Givens Moler and husband Frederick C. of New Castle, six grandchildren, Sara, Jake and Isaac Givens of Newport, Cody, Eli and Noah Moler of New Castle, one sister, Jean G. Lavene of Richmond, three sisters-in-law, Nancy D. Givens of Mechanicsville, VA, Glennadine S. Gouldman and husband Roger of Gum Spring, VA, Deborah S. Ayers and husband Wayne of Martinsville, VA and one brother-in-law, Guerry A. Semones and wife LeLage of Missouri. Funeral services will be conducted, Sunday April 16, 2017 at 5pm at the Newport-Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Newport, VA with the Rev. Morris Fleicher officiating. Interment will be Monday at 1pm at the Ross Cemetery in Simmonsville.
