Eleanor Lucille Moses Mathena

Eleanor Lucille Moses Mathena passed away on October 21, 2017. She was born in Giles County on February 22, 1926, to the late Compton Black Moses and Edna Lucille Moses. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband Harold H. Mathena and siblings Lois Moses Nelson, Betty Lee Moses and Compton R. (Buddy) Moses. She was raised in the Bluefield, Virginia, area and was a proud graduate of Graham High School where she graduated as valedictorian. She was an All-State Basketball player and in later years an accomplished golfer. She was a World War II bride and relocated to Giles County after the war. She and Harold operated a building supply business there for many years before she became a deputy treasurer for Giles County. She retired from the Giles County Treasurer's office with nearly 30 years of service. She was recognized as an astute business person and served in many capacities at her beloved Pearisburg United Methodist Church and the Chamber of Commerce. She was a loving, spiritual and outgoing person who truly lived by the Golden Rule. Her family was by far her most valued possession. Eleanor is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Larry R. (Randy) Mathena and Ellen; grandson Mark R. Mathena and wife Janyne; granddaughter Amy M. Ankrum and husband Andrew; great grandchildren Nathan and Katey Mathena and Ryan and Brady Ankrum all of Blacksburg; sister Billie Moses Gilmore of Lynchburg and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 23, 2017 at Pearisburg United Methodist Church at 11:00 am with the Rev. Dr. Brian Burch and the Rev. Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating. Interment to follow at Birchlawn Cemetery and Mausoleum. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 22, from 4-6 pm at Givens Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to Pearisburg United Methodist Church. The family would like to thank the administration and staff of Kroontje Health Care Center at Warm Hearth for their care, compassion and support.
